Guitarist and composer Javier Contreras was born in Chilean Patagonia. He is recognized by his colleagues as possessing great technical virtuosity and considered to be one of the most brilliant composers of his generation by many, having to his credit a large number of works for solo instruments, chamber music, orchestra and choirs. As a composer he was self-taught, and as a guitarist his main teachers were Manuel Contreras, Ariela Caripan and the renowned Chilean guitarist José Antonio Escobar. He has obtained several awards in both composition and classical guitar, and has toured, recorded, and given masterclasses around the world. Contreras has been in several important South American guitar festivals. World-renowned guitarists have performed and recorded his music, and he has several independent albums recording his own music. The prominent Mel Bay Publishing House of the United States has published several of his works as well as the magazine specialized in classical guitar Gendai Guitar of Japan. Currently he is a member of several chamber music groups, among them the ensemble “Extremo Sur” and the guitar duo “Dúo Sudamericano”.
