Bokyung Byun was born in Seoul, Korea, and began playing guitar at the age of 6. She took the stage for her first solo recital at the age of 11 and gained national attention through her teen years, having won first-prize in three renowned competitions. Ms. Byun moved to the United States when she was 16 and started attending the Juilliard School. She holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music from Juilliard and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California. Praised by Classical Guitar Magazine as “confident and quite extraordinary,” Bokyung Byun​ enjoys a reputation as one of the most sought-after guitarists of her generation. Ms. Byun has won many competitions, including being the first female winner of the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition. Most recently, she won the 2021 GFA International Concert Artist Competition. In recent seasons, Ms. Byun has performed as a soloist across the United States in orchestral settings and in recitals. She co-founded the Sounding Board Project: The New Music Initiative for Guitarists and Composers to encourage collaborative relationships to create new works for guitar. She released her debut album in 2020.
